Pierre Grimes and the Noetic Society

Overview

The Noetic Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit group with members in Southern California and around the world, who have been inspired to study Homer, Parmenides, the pre-Socratics, Plato, the neo-Platonists, and other perennial philosophers and mystics, not for academic reasons, but for personal spiritual growth. The society was founded by Pierre Grimes, PhD in 1967, and was incorporated in 1978.

Synopsis Pierre Grimes, PhD leads the Noetic Society through another brilliant weekend seminar increasing our understanding. This time Pierre helps us re-consider the training of the philosopher-king from the perspective of the One-Self ('emptiness', 'non-atman', etc.) vs Divine Luminosity ('bliss', 'Mind', etc.), via references from books 6 and 7 of Plato's "Republic", as translated by our own Juan and Maria Balboa , and via the hypotheses laid out in the Balboa translation of...

Synopsis Pierre starts us back into Homer's Iliad again. He begins by asking what it is we are looking for in the Iliad? And why did it gain the status among the Greeks of a sacred scripture? He has us think about focusing on the turn-about of Achilles, the roles of gods and men, and the significance, if any, of the idea of self, myself, selves, etc. It is on this last point that we spend most of the session, collecting all the quotes (from the Balboa translation) where self ('αυτο') is...

Synopsis Nice review and continuation of yesterday evening's (un-recorded) chat with Pierre at the Women's Club about the necessity for the philosophy of the Self. Much of the discussion focuses on the place for "Logos", and the special Platonic meaning of the terms, "Justice", and the post-midwife-talk experience (after one sees how a pathologos plays out in their family in a past scene, etc.). Relating Justice to Joriki (in Zen Buddhism) and other near-Eastern philosophy...

Synopsis Pierre opens up the question of what is a daemon in the Platonic world. Since Plato has emphasized rational daemons (such as the daemon, Love , in his Symposium , we have studied these before. Tonight Pierre reviews these, but also asks, what, then, is an irrational daemon? Synopsis Pierre leads us through this one-day, 3-session seminar exploring the dimension of the Self and the Logos in Plato's thought. The Self is both profoundly personal and transcendent since it is both the experiencer and the experienced. To realize this, Pierre leads us into the thought of Plato's Phaedrus for the union of the theme of love and the Logos. The path to its realization is seen to be joined with its source within the Self because it is through the inspired role of reflection...

Pierre asks us to consider some questions regarding dreams (with Bradley's help): What is the subject of dreams? Why are dreams the natural subject of analysis? Synopsis Pierre and the gang continue with more on Homer and Plato. Continued from yesterday . Highlights Discussion of both yesterday’s question re Plato and Homer , and Pierre’s 3/2020 APPA article Discussion of whether history needs to be used to read 599d (it can, and should, but Pierre argues that Plato can be evaluated also solely on the basis of the text itself, whether he is following his own criteria) Is Plato rejecting something vitally important in his own culture? Four of us explore our dreams with Pierre as midwife, as usual. Text of Dreams Belinda's dreams 4-28-18 There were many people in different experiences, there was many things in each experience, if one was in one experience and another in another, the other in the another could not see the experience the other was in, it was like whatever they were experiencing was the only thing that could be experienced, like they could only see the experience they were in, like there were no other...

Synopsis Another Saturday morning with Pierre and the gang. Continuing on yesterday’s discussion regarding the comparison of individual goods, Pierre (with Cathy’s help, and her having read the translation from the Balboas) explores how to have a conversation with people regarding their ‘goods’, and what the ultimate Good/goal is, both for us individually, and for all of us – the group we call ‘humanity’. Dialogue(s): parmenides Chapters: hyp1 Sections: 138b-e Synopsis Pierre goes over with us a section of the 1st hypothesis of Plato's dialogue, Parmenides , in which we explore Plato's different and very particular, specialized, and necessary use of the word, 'different' (heteron). (Images of tonight's diagrams are in the Download Options Menu on this page, as JPEGs.) Technical Issues I was missing my XLR cables tonight, so while Pierre is still in your left ear, I had to record the right ear...

Synopsis On this Saturday morning, Pierre starts out by asking us what would happen if we all decided to act justly. What would be the consequences? Highlights One consequence: We would have to stop blaming others for our own misery People believe they are in an unjust world, thus allowing them to blame others for their misery Having good reasons for (apparently) just actions What would happen socially, politically, industrially, if we put the standard of justice up front? Our own imprisonment...

Synopsis Another wonderful Saturday morning chat with Pierre and the gang. The topics mostly revolve around dreams and the 'Dream Master'. Highlights I tried to take a few notes while participating.. I probably missed a few points, but here we go.. Pierre asks Eldar how things have been going since the exploration of his his dream last night Pierre asks same of JeffS, which leads to another dream exploration, since JeffS got another dream last night. Jeff's dream: Pierre jumps out from between...

Dialogue(s): greater-hippias Pierre starts out by asking us: "What is the result of this dreamwork? For it follows a way of reasoning, opens new possibilities, and awakens the mind --" It is a certain kind of dialectic, etc. (Pierre had just finished exploring four dreams with us , earlier that same evening.) Hellenic culture valued dialectic , dialogue , and understanding . Our USA / Euro / modern culture values rhetoric . What do we mean by 'wealth'? What is the effect on the person...

Synopsis Pierre midwife's three of us during a Saturday morning at Regina's. A little bit of chit-chat at the end, but the majority of the gathering's time is dream work. Dream Texts JeffS's dreams Dream 1: Looking in the mirror I am looking in the mirror at myself. I am much younger and have a soldier's uniform on, and am handsome. I am examining my face because I can feel a sore on my cheek, and wanted to check it out. But when I look, it doesn't seem to be there. Or only remnants -- like it...

Dream Texts Belinda's Dream I was looking at the clouds in the sky, and seeing their beauty. Then I see shadows of what looked like spacecraft behind the clouds. Synopsis Cathy and I (JeffS) had scheduled a time to talk with Pierre to look at our dreams. As it turns out, both of our dreams had something to do with Plato's dialogue, Ion , which Pierre had recently put us onto, as an exercise in mastering a Platonic dialogue. In Cathy's case, her dream directly involved an ex-husband who was a preacher who often gave the same talk on the book of Isaiah. In Jeff's case, we looked at Jeff's dream using the same kinds of questions we used looking into the...
